Strengthening civil society in Southeast Asia


Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Najib Razak, recently made headlines by expressing support for free trade when he spoke at the National Colloquium on the broader topic of Malaysia’s upcoming chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2015. Tunku ‘Abidin Muhriz, president of Atlas Network partner Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), based out of Malaysia’s capital, also spoke at the three-day event.

Muhriz stressed the importance of independent civil society groups to a healthier society, in which public officials can be held accountable for results. Read more here in the Malay Mail’s article.
