Against the Dead Hand: The Uncertain Struggle for Global Capitalism by Brink Lindsey
John Wiley & Sons, Hoboken, NJ, 2001

Against the Dead Hand: The Uncertain Struggle for Global Capitalism, by Brink Lindsey, illuminates the ongoing debate over globalization by placing the phenomenon in a broader historical context. Surveying 150 years of history, Lindsey traces the rise and fall and rise again of globalization against the backdrop of tumultuous ideological shifts between market competition and central planning.

It reveals the remarkable extent to which the ‘dead hand’ of the old collectivist dream still shapes today’s world economy. Even if the collectivist faith has expired, the dead hand of its accumulated institutions remains a powerful influence on world affairs, said Cato president Ed Crane. Against the Dead Hand gives readers invaluable guidance to help further the quest for liberty and peace.

Definitely NOT the Romanow Report Health Care Project
Special Recognition Award for Innovative Projects

The Atlantic Institute for Market Studies (AIMS) (Canada) received the ‘Innovative Project Award’ for its nomination Definitely NOT the Romanow Report Health Care Project. Recognizing the immense economic and political implications of health care policy (the current national health care system is the single largest program expenditure of the Canadian government), AIMS orchestrates a comprehensive strategy to enter the nation’s health care debate and describes an alternative vision for the future.

The AIMS program piggy-backed on a highly-anticipated government report, which was named for senior retired politician Roy Romanow, who headed the federal inquiry into health care. AIMS pre-empted the media coverage of the Romanow report by releasing its own research three days before the government report’s release. AIMS used the many leaks from the Romanow Commission to set up its report as a rebuttal of the complacent federal report. With this award, AIMS is recognized for its innovative project design, communications strategy, policy impact and inter-institute collaboration. AIMS’s strategic matching of its own internal research program with movements in the larger policy world produced an outstanding model for the international think tank community.
