New Atlas Project on Sound Money

Atlas founder Antony Fisher‘s 1974 book, Must History Repeat Itself?, contained a list of eleven priorities for economic reform.  The top two concerned eliminating government meddling in the value of money.  During the low-inflation “long boom” of 1983-2000, the topic of Sound Money seemed to lose its salience.  But today, we see that the answer to the title of Antony’s book is — sadly but emphatically — “yes.”   The troubling monetary and fiscal policy responses to today’s financial crisis remind us of the fundamental importance of Sound Money to the cause of freedom, and demand new thinking and advocacy on the topic from the think tank network.

Atlas has launched a new Project on Sound Money toward these ends, in order to prevent government debasement of the currency. The project is beginning with small seminars involving experts on monetary policy, and the topic will be featured at Atlas’s upcoming Liberty Forum in Los Angeles on April 24-25.

We invite you to participate in a short Sound Money Survey (should take 5-10 minutes to complete), which is a preliminary step towards a Request For Proposals on the issue.

In April, we will unveil an essay contest on Sound Money as well.
