From Brazil to LA – Promoting Freedom through Liberty Forums!

As we prepare to head to the great state of California for our annual Liberty Forum, a few weeks ago Brazil had their own Liberty Forum which was attended by Atlas’s Diogo Costa, managing editor of Ordemlivre.org.  Capitalizing on this opportunity, Diogo organized his own gathering in Porto Alegre with 38 representative s from liberal organizations all across Brazil.  Together, they discussed proposals and strategies to advance free market principles in four areas: politics, media/culture, universities, and think tanks.

After a series of presentations on the state of affairs in Brazil, the participants were divided into four working groups, one for each of the areas mentioned above.  They could then devise and present long and short-term action plans for the advancement of liberalism.  These plans are being considered through further discussions.  The event ended with a lunch in partnership with IEE and Instituto Millenium, during which Mexico’s former president Vincente Fox gave a lecture emphasizing free trade and liberal values.  Fox will also be in Los Angeles, offering a keynote address during our Friday evening dinner at the Atlas Libety Forum.  Furthermore, the national Brazilian magazine, Veja, has recently published an article talking about Fox’s lecture in Brazil, and the 2009 Fórum da Liberdade event in Brazil.

This Brazilian Liberty Forum that followed OrdemLivre.org’s gathering was quite successful as well, and the man responsible for organizing this event – Rafeal Sá – had this to say about Diogo’s efforts:

OrdemLivre.org’s meeting was the kickoff to coordinate a real libertarian movement in Brazil.
