Chavez, Correa, Funes….Martinelli? One of these names is not like the others. The turn to the left by Latin America is
often all you hear when you turn to any news agency reporting on the region. However, this past Sunday the news was more optimistic. Ricardo Martinelli, a free market ally in Panama, recently won the Panamanian presidential elections by a pretty significant margin over Balbina Herrera, a former housing minister and ruling party candidate.
Martinelli has collaborated in the past with many of our think tank leaders in Latin America, most notably with Fundacion Libertad of Panama. In recently fact, I had an interesting conversation with Marissa Krienert (of Fundacion Libertad) who had high hopes for this electoral victory, and mentioned that this could not come at a better time as trade has dropped 72.9% , and the global economic crisis has reached the shores of Panama.
This is great news for our think tank allies both here and abroad, and many have reported on this “Victory for Freedom in Panama!“
