The Frontier Centre for Public Policy and the European Consumer Powerhouse just released The Euro- Canada Health Consumer Index 2009; an annual comparison of health care systems in Europe and Canada. The Index utilizes 32 healthcare performance indicators within five sub-disciplines: patient rights and information, waiting times for treatment, outcomes, range and reach of services provided, and pharmaceuticals. Canada, with 549 points out of a possible 1,000, was 23rd out of 32 countries.
Canada compares reasonably well with the best performing health care systems on outcomes, is average on the generosity scale, and at the absolute bottom when it comes to patient’s rights, waiting times and availability of pharmaceuticals.
