Roman Ortiz speaking at Security Conference in Canada!

Since the turn of the century, many in the foreign policy world have turned their attention to regions with immediate roman-ortiz1security challenges (e.g. Middle East, Horn of Africa, etc.).  In the meantime, the security environment in Latin America has steadily deteriorated as insurgency groups have resurfaced in Peru, drug cartels have dominated most of Central America, and some even claim that Mexico is on the verge of collapse.  To address these challenges Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada will be hosting a conference on June 10-12, 2009 called “At Home in the Americas” which will hopefully advance towards a comprehensive strategy to tackle the following themes:

  • The Security Environment;
  • Building Security in the Americas;
  • North American Security Perspectives; and
  • Expectations and Strategies.

Spared no expense, they have put together impressive panels of experts with many familiar names from the SFS network, such as  some of our allies in the US defense community – like Colonel (ret) John Cope, Dr. Max Manwaring, and Steve Johnson – as well as one of our intellectual entrepreneurs – Dr. Roman Ortiz from Fundacion Ideas para la Paz in Bogota, Colombia.

Throughout the last year, we have been supporting Dr. Ortiz in developing contacts in North America and we are pleased to hear that he will be presenting his viewpoints to such high level policy figures.

If you would like to attend the conference, registration is still open!
