Jeevika: Asia Livelihood Documentary Competition and Festival 2009

On a recent trip to India, I had the chance to sit down with Manoj Mathew of New Delhi’s Centre for Civil Society and learn about their Jeevika documentary competition. Founded in 2003, the competition originally focused on Indian-themed films, but expanded to South East Asia in 2005 and this year welcomes entries from all of Asia. All of the films must focus on the issue of what the Centre calls “livlihood”, which means capitalism and economic freedom for those at the bottom of the income ladder. As the people at the Centre say, “Nobody appreciates free enterprise more than the poor hawker.”

The deadline for entries is fast approaching (June 30th), but it’s an outlet to keep in mind for documentary makers everywhere. Manoj told me that they’ve already received more than 130 entries for this year’s competition. An awards ceremony will be held August 28-30th in New Delhi to honor the winners.
