Democracy and the European Union

euflags1Last week, on July 2nd, Sweden took over the rotating presidency of the European Union. As the  Czech Republic gave up its reigns, Matthew Elliott of the Taxpayers’ Alliance wrote to the leaders of Sweden, to encourage them to adopt sound policies as they take over this new leadership position. Published originally in Swedish newspaper Expressen, Elliott particularly focuses on the importance of respecting Democracy within the EU states, and the threats to those principles that the Lisbon Treaty includes.

As the new President of the EU, the Swedish Government have an important choice. Either they can force through the Lisbon Treaty by any means possible, … or they can put democracy above their own personal support for the Treaty.
