Sowell On Healthcare

Last week, economist Thomas Sowell of the Hoover Institutionsowellthomas at Stanford University (California) weighed in on the healthcare debate with some wise words for policymakers.  Writing for the National Review Online on August 4, Sowell opines:

“Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.” We have heard that many times. What is also the price of freedom is the toleration of imperfections. If everything that is wrong with the world becomes a reason to turn more power over to some political savior, then freedom is going to erode away…do not be surprised when life-and-death decisions about you or your family are taken out of your hands — and out of the hands of your doctor — and transferred to bureaucrats in Washington.”

In the article, entitled “Utopia Versus Freedom,” Sowell establishes the proper context for the current debate over various schemes for nationalizing America’s healthcare system – it is the latest playground for utopian dreamers and schemers. The problem, Sowell observes, rests in a fundamental unwillingness on the part of utopians to confront the reality of living with the painful realities that are often simply unavoidable.
