This new series will feature guest blog posts from think tank leaders around the world. This month, we’ll learn about the work and experiences of Instytut Globalizacji (The Globalization Institute) in Poland, written by the institute’s founder, Tomasz Teluk. Below, Tomasz discusses the several projects that helped The Globalization Institute establish itself in Poland and other successful programs over the course of their four years of existence.
Summertime is typically considered holiday time, but not at Globalization Institute’s headquarters! After a short break we are working on old and new projects.
Just before the holidays we attended debates organized by the Polish National Bank about the Euro. Conferences were organized in several Polish universities. Our statement was that competition of national currencies is better for consumers than a Euro monopoly. The Polish economy is developing much faster than the Eurozone. That is why the value of Polish zloty is growing. From a free-market perspective Poland should not enter the Eurozone. Countries of the Eurozone are experiencing permanent stagnation and their financial sovereignty is limited. Students at the conference supported our point of view.
In late June we organized a conference on competition in the Polish mobile telephone market. Mobile communication is crucial in the Information Era. Our report compared competition in Polish and the EU markets. Poland has one of the most competitive markets in the EU. Prices are going down and offers are of better quality. But, on the other hand we see more and more intervention in the market by the Office of Electronic Communication (OEC). We explained that a bigger OEC budget means more intervention into markets, and in last few years the OEC budget grew by 70 per cent. Barriers in the mobile telephone market cost 10 billion Polish zloty (approximately US$3.4 billion) a year. Is not easy to be an entrepreneur in Poland.
