This series features guest blog posts from think tank leaders around the world. This is the last entry from Instytut Globalizacji (The Globalization Institute) in Poland, written by the institute’s founder, Tomasz Teluk. Below, Tomasz discusses Globalization Institute’s plans and hopes for the future.
We look forward to the Globalization Institute’s growth in the years ahead. Jacek Spendel – one of our fellows and a Board Member begins his fellowship in Washington DC in September. The experience he gains there will be very useful for the organization upon his return.
Next summer we plan to organize the third edition of the English Liberty Camp. Liberty Camp is a one-week course for students. The goal is to explore liberty from various perspectives – economics, philosophy, history and law – while practicing English. The first Camp was organized 11 years ago in Lithuania. The Globalization Institute was a partner of the first two camps in Poland and next year we will act as organizers. We hope to bring new people and present students with excellent speakers and lectures.
This year, we plan to begin a new project: A discussion on how to invest private money in times of financial crisis. It is very important for consumers to develop their economic knowledge and to think independently of advertisements, marketing and popular myths. Such thinking drives people to lose their savings by banks commissions or inflation. In our opinion, a good solution for private investors is the diversification of investments and hedging.
The other project we have planned for the coming year is related to the transportation sector. The thesis that the most corrupt countries have the worst highways is true regarding Poland. We have not yet built highways in Poland. The result is thousands of accidents and dozens of deaths on the roads every day.The government suggests that Poles are simply bad drivers or that they drive cars in poor condition. Everyone knows that the main problem is the infrastructure, corruption and a state monopoly. We are going to start the public debate on what to do in order to speed up highway construction before 2012 and how to better organize transportation in Poland.
The Globalization Institute is financed purely by donations from private enterprises and persons. We do not accept any government, (sorry, tax-payers’ confiscated) money. For the same reason we are not members of any programs financed by the European Union. We try to manage our institution as a company. That is why our first source of income is through preparing reports, analysis and expertise for companies.
