Updated: Atlas and Sagamore Institute to Co-Sponsor a Conference in Indianapolis, October 23, 2009

Please join us for a half-day conference at the Sheraton Hotel in Indianapolis on October 23, 2009, just before the start of The Philadelphia Society’s regional meeting.  Our co-sponsor, The Sagamore Institute for Policy Research , which is based in Indianapolis, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank engaged in “applied research,” that is, it puts to the test theories and ideas in the real world.

Our theme for the meeting is “The Advance of Liberty: Challenges and Opportunities Around the Globe.”  We will bring together experts on the problems and the prospects for improvement that countries in the Americas and in Africa are facing these days, including trade and security issues affecting U.S. relations with Mexico and Canada, and issues of governance and civil society which are at the core of Africa’s future.

Steve Goldsmith, Professor of Government at Harvard Kennedy School and former mayor of Indianapolis, will be our keynote speaker. Michael Walker, Senior Fellow at the Fraser Institute, and Roger Pardo-Maurer, former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the Pentagon, are among our confirmed panelists.  Ulrich Wacker, regional director for Latin America of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (Germany), and one of Atlas’s main partners around the world, will describe their work in twelve Latin American countries.  Other presentations will address the good example provided by Chilean economic policies, and the positive trend of the expansion of university education across the Americas.
