“The findings of this study challenge the very rationale of Pakistan’s poverty alleviating strategies, which have constantly been failing as the number of those who are below the Poverty Line, instead of decreasing, has increased.” He further said, “Though this study focuses only on two districts of Punjab, it amply shows the overall inefficacy of government initiatives in reducing poverty.”- Khalil Ahmed
Today the Alternate Solutions Institute released their new report, Well Being and Freedom at a Crossroads: An Empirical Inquiry into Development. This report studies two regions in Punjab, Bahawalpur and Sialkot, and finds that increased economic freedom rather than merely guaranteeing social opportunities will go farther to alleviate poverty in Pakistan. The underlying principle is that rule of law, and economic freedom are necessary for growth in the country.
