Documenting Freedom

One of the world’s best and most successful documentary competitions is the Jeevika Asia Livelihood Documentary Festival, sponsored by the Centre for Civil Society in New Delhi, India. Under the leadership of Dr. Parth Shah, the competition “aims at capturing the livelihood challenges faced by the rural and urban poor and bringing it to the attention of the public, media, judiciary, and most importantly, policy makers.”

Submissions must focus on one of the following countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea and Taiwan.  If you live in one of these countries, or know someone who does, please pass the information along.

The competition looks to capture powerful stories, and as such, don’t require expensive equipment and vast amounts of training, only a compelling storyline and commitment to the project.
