Atlas Network President and Senior Fellow Matt Warner has been named one of five recipients of America’s Future Foundation’s 2019 Buckley Award, which recognizes outstanding young conservatives and libertarians for their above-and-beyond professional service to advance freedom.

“Much of this honor is owed to the increased visibility the Atlas Network team has achieved for our work to increase economic opportunity and end poverty in the U.S. and around the world through our Doing Development Differently project,” said Warner. “There is probably nothing more satisfying than being able to contribute to something greater than oneself, so I consider this very exciting award to be a tribute to the work of our team and the work of our incredible grantees throughout the world who are achieving better economic opportunity for those most vulnerable to the effects of misguided economic policy and weak institutions.”

Warner, who joined Atlas Network in 2010, has been instrumental in creating an institutional vision that illustrates how securing economic rights for people living in poverty represents the best chance for accelerating the pace of poverty alleviation throughout the world. He coined the term “the outsider's dilemma” to describe the challenge of helping low-income countries develop without inadvertently and perversely getting in the way of their most viable paths to prosperity. His work has appeared in Cato Journal, Forbes, Harvard University’s Education Next, Real Clear Markets, EconTalk, and Washington Times, among many others. Warner has a master’s degree in economics from George Mason University and is certified by Georgetown University in organizational development consulting.

America’s Future Foundation’s interview with Warner, who shares his perspective on the key to tackling poverty, offers a glimpse of his typical day at the office, and gives a quick shoutout to Thomas Jefferson, is online. He also spoke recently on the Cato Institute Daily Podcast about economics in the developing world and published a piece on the failures of foreign aid on the Foundation for Economic Education’s website.

The Buckley Award, given annually by America’s Future Foundation, honors National Review founder William F. Buckley, Jr., who was, at a very young age, a champion of a philosophical approach to freedom that combined traditionalist conservatism and classical liberalism. Guided by Buckley’s fierce intellect and watchful eye, National Review “raised the banner of the individual freedom and dignity of human beings against Leviathans at home and abroad.”

Previous winners of the Buckley Award include Peter Redpath of the Federalist Society, Katie Pavlich of Townhall, Mollie Hemingway of The Federalist, and many more. The full slate of winners will be honored at the America’s Future Foundation gala on May 23 at Nationals Park in Washington, DC.
